Caustic 2.0 is coming...

Exciting news for Caustic owners and Android music makers. I've got a few week's work left polishing up version 2.0 of Caustic and it's HUGE. It would probably be shorter to list what's NOT new rather than the new features so for now I'll give you the major items with some screenshots. A more complete feature list, as well as a user's manual, will accompany the official release.

New visuals

Mixer 1.0 vs 2.0

I've spent a bit of time "tightening up the graphics" on Caustic using the excellent SkinMan and KnobMan programs. The result is an app that takes itself a little more seriously compared to the programmer art I had in version 1.0. This should also allow for new skins to be created in the future.

Dynamic rack

You can now put whatever 6 machines you like in your rack. You want a crazy acid rig with 5 BassLines and a BeatBox, go for it. Nothing but SubSynths? Sure! Some machines are harder on the processor than others, but I've optimized everything to handle the average song on most devices. This also opens up the possibility of adding new machines to Caustic, which has me excited. I've already got a few prototype machines showing a lot of promise.

Pattern Editors for everyone

The SubSynth and PCMSynth now have pattern editors too. You can create entire orchestrations in pattern mode now, then drop them into the sequencer's single-page "pattern view". The sequencer still has full-song piano roll for things that don't suit patterns.

I know the sequencer is a major sore spot for the app right now and I think the new pattern editors will help take away some of the pain while I continue improving the workflow.

PCMSynth is all grown up

The PCMSynth extends to a full screen's worth of features. It's literally half sampler, half synth. Load up a simple WAV file or load a complex multi-sample instrument with loop points and send that all through the Filter, LFO and envelopes. The PCMSynth can now also load straight from SoundFont files (.sf2). Don't get carried away and load your 600Mb pro grand piano set, there's lots of older sf2 files on the net that make good mobile app instruments. I'll include some nice small ones with this release.

The PCMSynth will load up to 64 samples, or until you run out of RAM and it crashes ;-)

BeatBox gets more control

The BeatBox got some love too. It gets a entire new top half, exposing lots of controls you'd find in a typical drum machine. You'll get: Tone, Punch(attack), Decay, Volume as well as Pan adjustments per-instrument. The BeatBox is the only machine with stereo output for now, but it might be going into others later on.

Insert Effects

The insert effects now break off to their own screen, with support for 2 effects per mixer channel and allowing for real-time editing as well as control automation.

The bad news

There's always something, but this is minor. With each machine having its own pattern editor and a new effects section, there's a lot more scrolling to be done. The "machine jump" screen, which now also serves as the dynamic rack management screen, is going to be used a lot. Because some devices don't have a search button, this popup is now also mapped to a quick button in the bottom bar. I know some will get annoyed at all this scrolling, but I think the added features make it worthwhile.

The other news is the price of the full version is going up to ~8$. I've spent the better half of the last three months working like crazy to add major features and improve the app. Without revealing exact sales figures, let's just say I'm doing this for passion more than profit right now and that has to change a bit if I'm to keep going with updates. What does this mean to you? For those who've already bought the app, thank you very much for your support so far, you'll be getting this upgrade like any other for free when it comes out. If you haven't bought yet and were waiting for the app to mature, take a chance and buy it soon for cheap or wait and pay a bit more. I have no doubt the new version will be well worth the asking price.

I'm really hoping to have this out for the holidays but there's still a bit of work to do and I really don't want to publish until it's solid so please be patient, it'll be worth it.

Thanks for reading, take care.

  3. Awesome that's really exciting! I'll definitely give this a go. Not used caustic for a bit as my desire developed a nasty overheating problem.

  4. AWESOME! Nice bro - still keen to make a skin some time if you ever open that feature up to outsiders :)

  8. Can you suggest a good device for running Caustic?

  9. Awesome news! And I really like the new graphics -- they make Caustic look as professional as it already sounds. Thanks for all your hard work.

  10. BTW: Is it too soon to ask for a full modular synth for Caustic? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  11. @Palm-Sounds: I think the 7" tablets are just the right size for Caustic. I hear it runs great on Galaxy tab. It runs pretty well on my Nook Color, but I'm overclocked...I'm sure it'll do well on the new Kindle Fire when I eventually get around to publishing it with Amazon.

@-42-: The full modular is one of my prototypes, still a few obstacles to overcome, but drop me a line if you'd like to bounce ideas around.

  22. Wow, just... wow! Caustic is fun as it is, but now it will become a serious music making tool on the go. Hope you get some good press with this -- a lot of people are probably waiting for FL Studio Mobile to be released for Android but if they see what Caustic 2.0 can do they'd be fools not to go for it, especially at just $8.

The PCMSynth especially seems to be exactly what I want. That, and the step sequecers, and the configurability, and...

  23. i've been playing with the free version off and on for a few months now and i kept trying to remind myself to buy the full version. today i had the notion to check your blog here again and im glad i did. saved me the trouble of forgetting to buy it when i saw an update was near i immediately bought it so i could get those extra goodies =)
keep up the great work this is now my photoshop for music when im away from my keyboards and synthesizers at home.
I use a toshiba thrive i havent tested it out yet but i suspect i might be ale to plug my kaossilator pro into my tablet and directly control this app since they both have the ability for midi control correct?

  24. Great app. Spend several hours per week using. Wouldn't mind seeing a tool that lets you select anything between the loop markers in sequencer mode, when using synths, but maybe the pattern editor will accomplish the same thing.

Currently using an Archos 70it to run it, but am going to switch phone to Motorola Triumph soon. Anyone know if Caustic will run on the MT?

lastly, any chance an iOS port of this will ever appear?

    ReplyDelete
  25. @sorrymybadguys: I don't know what's up with the market the last couple of days, but it's not under my control. Google tend to break things when they "upgrade" their system. My guess is it'll fix itself within a few days. I'll probably just put up a separate unlock key app for purchase on AndroidPit and maybe even the Android market just to avoid dealing with these issues when Google break things every month or so.

@Gopal: I suspect the pattern editor will get you most of what you'd want in a bar select anyway, and obviously you'll be able to copy pattern notes across patterns, even across to other machines if the note data is compatible. (i.e can't put synth notes on a beatbox)

About iOS, it's something on my agenda for early 2012, no idea where that'll take me, but it's worth a shot. My code will probably port over quickly so the "test phase" should be short and I'll know pretty quick if it's worth pursuing.

  26. Man , im hooked on caustic !! cant wait for v2 . ive owned a fair few hardware units and now use reason ... this Caustic is pretty much a cross between rebirth and reason and in my van at work any spare minute im making awesome acid/dubstep .

It would be perfect if live keys of subsynth could be recorded .

And in looks dept i think the meccano-style bit in the left of rack should be styled better .

Thanks for putting your time into this v2 , it would make my life a great deal better to have it now but im sure the final will be amazing .

Oh and .. i have a small screen , a zoom function would be apprectiated .

    Caustic user for life here.

    peace

  27. Wow I see cultivation, thank you :) Add a Mic please, with all the mixing it would be awesome.
Check this out: Oneness!: I found out I can load ANY samples to the Caustic app. First I added the samples from the Supreme MPA app through a computer to Caustic's sampler and to an other file to Caustic's Drum-computer. That makes it the perfect sampler and studio to work for me. I just got to record my voice in an other program, I use, easy and good, Mixcraft on the PC. Caustic's 2 Bassline machines are first-class. Another tip for the caustic app besides the conversion of wav.files into mp3´s with Tape Machine Recorder by Samalyse (the converted files land in the Caustic export songs file) is to save personal 815I3239I5663 Base-sets in your songs with your personal default sound arrangements and programmed base-drum-sets. That way you can compose a song real quick, starting from a saved base set. You can program any drum sound to a drum-pad of Caustic's drum-machine. THANK YOU!!

  28. My device isnt compatable with the android market, but i downloaded the demo from a sister site, but i cant seem to figure out how to buy the full version? I dont mind paying 8 seeing that 2.0 is almost ready, can i buy direct from you or is there a sister site i can buy from that youll get your proper dues?

    ReplyDelete
  29. @Adam: Microphone is still a question mark, but another app I plan to release might shed some light in the new year... hang tight Mr.Globalfirm

Thanks for your "base set" idea, version 2.0 will allow you to set your default rack to whatever you want, that way when you hit new song, you'll start with whatever you saved as your base.

@Nathan: I'm not sure which "sister site" you got it from but I haven't published Caustic anywhere but the official market so far. If you can't buy, check that you've got the latest version (1.2.0), I've mostly seen the old 1.0.4 floating around then net.

Version 2.0 WILL be posted on more app stores, including alternative payment options as I want to make sure anyone with a compatible device can get it. Plus I'm a little tired of Google's in-app purchase bugs.

  30. The sequencer screenshot is a bit too small to see clearly, but it looks like the patterns aren't limited to one bar in 2.0. Am I right?

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Bacon: Patterns are all 1 bar for now. The sequencer just allows you to stretch one pattern across multiple bars to have it repeat (instead of adding the same pattern multiple times)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think a zoom function would be perfect for small phones such as the Experia . I really hope that you can do that

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh wow it looks great! Love the colours and it's still retains a bit of retro!

I wonder what kind of cheapo tablet can run this....a Nook colour or a Fire?

It's so exciting the thought of new instruments. Hows about a SID C64 virtual machine for starters ( even if it uses samples!). You could create mini versions of syths that are really cute like a miniminimoog or hows about a minimellotron.

Ah wish I could program Android. My head is spinning from all the possibilities!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sorry just read above someone who said it ok runs reasonably on a Nook......overclocked.

It would be helpful once you've finished it if people could post their devices they use to run Caustic so we can get a general idea.... just a thought.

Can't wait for it to come out! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. @pixelblip: I'm glad you're excited, so am I. I have a big list of things to explore I CAN'T WAIT to get into.

I loved my C64 too, I though of creating something like this as a machine for Caustic, maybe simplified a bit..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_GqiL6zLiw

I have a Nook Color and it's just a little underpowered for Caustic, I don't understand why, it SHOULD be a good processor.

    ReplyDelete
  36. C64 machine? Great idea. I can provide you 8 samples from my old Atari XL800 drum machine we used for our very first band demo in 1989.

I am looking forward 2.0 that much I check your site and Market account really frequently ;)

  37. That Glitch Sid IOS plugin is wicked! The sounds from it are awesome! They evoke Atari 2600s from 1980. Really cool grungy 8bitness.

I used to own one of these (where did that go I wonder!) - this would make another great plugin or Caustic:

Also a speech engine thingy would be great. Like Acorn did with Speech!

    Or C64

  38. Awesome! If I could become a Cyborg and integrate this app with my cerebral cortex, that would just about do it there.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Whoa! I had been using uloops for a while so I didn't have time to play around with Caustic. Recently I let my subscription lapse and decided to play with Caustic a little bit (love the immediate editing feedback). I liked it and decided to buy right away. Then I was looking for tips and tricks and saw this blog. Man, do I feel lucky I bought this thing at this time!

Any plans of adding functionality for tablets (like the instrument and sequencer in the same window)?

    ReplyDelete
  40. @tiger0range: Yes, that's planned for the next release (2.1). It's one of those feature I almost had working but not quite good enough to make this release.

    ReplyDelete
  41. the suspense is killing me , i bought caustic a few weeks back and im hoping everyday to find 2.0 . any idea how long before release ?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Caustic is the best available music production app for Android. So excited for version 2. Thanks for the hard work and great software.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I check the market and this blog multiple times per day for 2.0

I am that excited for it.

Totally don't mind the wait though, especially as you gave us LoopStack to play with for the last week.

Much love, will keep checking ...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks for being patient guys, xmas was a little rough with everyone in my house getting sick for a few weeks so I'm not as far ahead as I'd hoped to be by this point. (LoopStack had been ready for a few weeks and was just missing a few things to release and even that took forever)

I'm REALLY hoping to have it out next week, but no sooner than Wednesday for sure, still lots to do on the "outside content", like manual, videos, etc. So you can stop hitting refresh on your browser for now. Sorry.

When it finally comes out the excitement for me is going to be similar to when sonic 2 came out for sega Megadrive/genisis all those years ago ... never thought I be so looking forward to any software in this way even again.
