hm, when i try to upgrade it hangs, and when i remove 1.2 and reinstall, i get 1.2 back. market weirdness?
Yeah, the market is super slow this morning... it used to be that the moment you hit "publish" it was live, now it's been over 30 minutes and no update yet... hang in there, it'll show up soon!
ok, i'll be patient :) thanks for the fantastic work, easily the most impressive android app i know, been converting quite a number of people into caustic junkies!
Ok, looks like it's live now. Have fun and let me know if you find any bugs, I'm sure I'll have missed a few.
You've done it again mate! Awesome job!
Thanks, man.Totally worth the wait. Must go play more!
Worth waiting for :-)It has freezed a few times for me though.
This is awesome!! Now we need community site with forum. :-)
It's coming. I'll be switching everything over to www.singlecellsoftware.com soon.
Very good, I'm impressed Rej! It's much easier to create a song with new sequencer. It's worth to mention you can download "community pack#1" from the market,or through application pressing "get more" tab in rack's databank.
whohoo! [ and thanks for using my review ;) ] will update later and report back my excitement :)
I got a problem with this on my samsung gs2...it freezes up in song mode in the song editor when pressing the stop button twice to reset the black time bar...Brilliant new version though...thanks.
Crashes a lot when working with songs written on previous caustic (1.0)I can't see this happening when doing new stuff. Compatibility problem?Very promising music application, keep up the good work.
RE:compatibility issues. It's possible, I didn't have that many songs to test it out. There are quite a few changes to the file format so ensuring backwards compatibility was a challenge. If you have an example song that crashes a lot, send it through via email and describe how to get it to crash. I'll have a look to see if I missed something.
I'm loving the changes, much more usable all around! Now all I need is some talent...
This is so cool. Well worth the wait. It's so easy to use now that I have actually made a song. as above though, need to get some talent. Not had any issues so far with cashing on G S2. Tried to recreate pressing stop in song mode and old files load ok.with regards to community stuff how about throwing stuff up on sound cloud and giving relevant tags
Well done and thanks very much for the effort , special thanks for the free upgrade too !! The software itself is perfect and feels much more responsive and the engine sounds brilliant . My friend and I were using reason on 1 laptop and fly studio on another while playing sounds from subsynth and it holds up very well , great submit and sounds like a good vst .This is a great tool .Is there any way to sync to laptop in any way ?Thanks . Russell
Great stuff! Best app i have in my phone, by far! Nothing else on market is even close.
Whoa, this is awesome. I've been a fan since the first days of Caustic, and I'm glad you not only didn't give up, you've transformed it into something absolutely jaw-dropping.Any possibility to cut pattern blocks in the sequencer in the future? Some patterns might have useful bits in them that are shorter than a bar, so cutting them down for creative mashing would open more possibilities.Another thing I'd like to see is an automation editor, and possibly tying automation in with patterns. Stutter effects are hard to create right now, and we can't fine-tune almost perfect takes. Thanks for the wonderful app!
Congrats Rej :) Excellent work!
Unique! Where can i upload the Tracks imade for sharing?
Wow. U have made my android tablet into an amazing music creation platform. Love the new version!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm really getting to love working in Caustic 2.0 the more I use it, it isn't just an acceptable mobile app, it is an excellent MUSIC app in its own right :) it really strikes a nice balance with simplicity and features, and I am getting my own workflow tricks figured out now, where I never really did with Caustic 1.0. I'm excited to see the new machines that may come, and if I can make a suggestion about the sequencer, it would be really awesome if some sort of global 'fold' ie. Ableton Live were implemented, it would really make working on a small screen more efficient :) But my geek dream of having a full studio in my pocket is here, today I used Caustic to write out a song, added vocals with J4T, and 'mastered' it with TapeMachine, then posted it wirelessly to SoundCloud and Facebook automatically. That is pretty cool for $20 in software on a phone you can get for free on contract. If I had any talent I could do really amazing things!
I had a couple more feature requests: option for per-pattern or per-track automation, so filter tweaks, volume levels etc could be built into patterns. Maybe even patch changes, that would extend the usefulness of the six tracks considerably. It would also be cool to be able to scroll through patches in Subsynth while hearing your pattern, it would make voicing your tracks more natural.
Thanks for the bug killing update.
Excellent! I use ableton at home.... and this everywhere else! One suggestion. please add an equalizer. i feel its the only thing missing.
First, apologies for a long post. Like other people here, I am finally actually making music with my phone thanks to the upgrade. Great! Now for the feature requests, in order of importance to me:1. Variable length patterns. As it is now, if I want to have, say, a chord that starts on the last 16th of a bar and extends through the whole next bar, or a melody with notes extending over bar borders, I have to use the piano roll view in the sequencer, and paste the notes to every place where I need them. This gets tedious and hampers my work flow. A selectable pattern length of 1 to 8 bars should cover most bases. This isn't necessary for the Beatbox though.2. As brajeshwar mentioned above: automation per pattern would also make life much easier.3. Higher resolution in the step sequencers (including the Beatbox). Often 16th notes aren't enough; I'd like to see at least 32nd note resolution.4. A choice of different time signatures in the step sequencers (including the Beatbox) - sometimes I want to make music in 6/8, 3/4, or even 7/4 time.5. A swing/shuffle feature in the Subsynth, Bassline, and PCM Synth sequencers, with a choice of swing on the 16th notes, 8th notes, or 32nd notes (this choice should be in the Beatbox too).6. A true monophonic mode for the Subsynth with portamento so it can be used as a true lead/bass synth. The Bassline works quite well for this already, but it's a bit limited sonically. That's all I can come up with for now. Keep up the good work!
Keyboard latency is so much better in version 2. Do you think it's possible to add live playing note input capabilities? That would be insane.
@Bacon:1 - Yup, I knew that was going to come up, it hampers my workflow too when I use it. I just needed to get the first iteration out into the wild and later improve upon it. There's always UI concerns about fitting the extra stuff on screen, but I'm sure there's a way.2 - That's something I'm hoping to include in the next version (2.1). I have a solution that involves the synth pattern editors, but I'm still stuck as to how to do it for the basslines and beatbox...3 - It might possible to have more, with a section selector like Reason does it, but again UI space is holding it back.. I might add a flam trigger too.4 - That's also something that's been requested since the first version. 3/4 is likely, but I'm not sure about the other modes..5 - Yeah I agree it's weird to have shuffle in one instrument but not the others. Would a global shuffle be more useful or are there times where you wouldn't want shuffle on everything?6 - Now that machines can be added/removed, I'm thinking of creating a full modular monosynth with patching and everything as a treat for the gear-heads. When I get around to that, I'll add proper portamento. I can probably then be added it to any synth set to monophonic as well.If you have more comments or would like to bounce ideas around, my ear is always open but I prefer email as it's easier to refer to when I'm working on features and trying to remember conversations. :-)@jonnylightning: I lowered the internal latency from 8ms to 3ms, but there's always Android's terrible audio mixer and its >50 output latency. Live note recording is in prototype stage right now so hopefully it'll make it in for 2.1, but no promises.
Jbinyar@gmail.com Awesome caustic is like morning coffee to the googs daw world. I hang around and enviable group of musicians of various talents, whom I impressed with the sounds I created on my way home from work that being said there are a lot of things that can be added, my 1st a LP and a HP filter, 2nd add option of 8 step 32 or 64 step and when or if you include loopstack increase it to 8 bars and give us the option to have loopstack record external and internal sounds simultaneously or just external sounds while grooving with loopstacks...thanks rej
This is really one of the best app on my tablet, thanks SOOOO much for your effort! I'm telling all my friends about Caustic now as an example of a serious and useful Android media app.BTW is it legally OK to sell music I've written in Caustic if the app has been properly purchased via Android Market?
I've just downloaded the demo and the app is fun. A couple of feature requests: 1. swing for the synth patterns 2. the prospect of saving patterns within the instrument preset (this would be useful to save ideas and drop them into other arrangements) 3. Some kind of an "analog" limiter on the output 4. Stereo output for sampler.I know the key to a great app is to focus on useability and avoid bloating but just my 2¢...
In addition to my previous anonimous post ("This is really one of...") - a couple of minor bugs that I found:1) When you switch to another app then back to Caustic in pattern editor view the current pattern is incorrectly displayed as pattern 1 (though in fact the pattern remains the same).2) OGG export stops if the screen is locked. And a couple of feature requests - just wanted to know if and when this would be possible:1) A label near the multi-select icon (in the sequencer window) that would show how many blocks are currently selected (to avoid occasional stretching etc.)2) A Transpose function for pattern editor.3) An arpeggiator.4) An Undo function. And once again thanks for all the fun your app is bringing!
Does the PCM synth recognize wav files with embedded loop points? I've tried loading some in and it doesn't seem to recognize them. Is the only way to set loop points within the Caustic app itself? Thanks...
@Anonymous: No, I'll have to add that for the next version. The potential problem there is a WAV can contain more than one set of loop points. I can just pick the first one I guess, at least as a default.
@nMer:1) That sounds like a bug, altough minor. I'll see aboput fixing it. There are lots of other minor bugs when switching between apps, as Caustic gets taken out of memory has has to load everything up again.2) Yes, unfortunately if Caustic kept running while it's in the background, it would slow down your phone so much it might be unusable for things like browsing and potentially even making phone calls. Hence, I disable all processing when not in the app, including export. As for your features:1) I'll see about adding that, I agree it's annoying sometimes.2) I'm running out of UI Space so I'll see what I can do. The pcmsynth and bassline synths can transpose via knobs in their interface.3) An ARP would add another screen, so once again the problem of limited UI space comes in... maybe as a different view for the pattern editors...4) I've been trying to avoid that by making the editors simple but I'll see about it for v2.1
I'm the "Anonymous" that asked about loop points... Loop points are recognized in wavs contained in sf2 files. Good to know. Another question: how to I change the tempo? Thanks....
Rej, from one music app developer to another, you've done an absolutely brilliant job! I know the UI is crammed with functionality, but, honestly, it is way more usable than that of my Korg M3.The #1 feature I'm missing would be export of controller info along with the MIDI. After exporting my ideas to my DAW, it's kind of a bummer it isn't there after all my careful tweaking (and all the hard work *you* put into the automation).Something to think about; in order to save UI space and gain finer & intuitive control over automation, have you thought about using the accelerometer as an input? You'd have two axis to play with at the same time - brilliant for, for example, cut off and resonance tweaking.Great stuff!
@Rej>Hence, I disable all processing when not in the app, including export. This is OK for phone users but not so crucial for tablet users like me. Another feature request, then: add an option to play in background (with a HUGE RED GLOWING reminder about the aforementioned risks).
Feature request: ability to save presets in the bassline module.
I love caustic but the biggest thing I think it is lack is an ability to select all notes immediately without having to tap each note individually. A select all button would be beautiful. Or perhaps a toggle which gives you a selection box so you can drag and select all the notes you want. Implementing this feature would greatly increase the power and efficiency of the app, and make it more professional-like.
I agree with Matt. This would make composing and editing so much easier!
Rej, please reply about e.q. capabilities. cheers mate.
As a beginner that has tried various 'powerhouse' programs like ableton and reason to get into making music... I finally manage to get some headway by using Caustic. Actually not having a billion options for each element of the process means I can focus on the important options, which of course this app has.I tried recreating the very simple beat, bassline and lead I had created in Ableton and wasn't able to get it done without confusing myself! Now to learn how to import some of my drum samples from battery format ♥
@Matt: I'll assume you're the same Matt who also wrote me, if not, here's a copy-paste of the email reply:I wanted to add a lasso select but ran out of time for this release... If you'll notice there's room up the top of the sequencer for it though.... it's coming. I was hoping the pattern sequencers would draw people away from the terrible piano-roll sequencer ;-)@Anonymous: What kind of EQ are you referring to? There's a 3band EQ on each instrument + master, are you talking about a full 9/15/30 band graphic EQ or a parametric EQ? Equalizers are usually fairly expensive on the CPU, which is why it's 3 band only right now.If you have questions, email is usually best for getting replies. I'm spread a bit thin over different forums and this blog, so email is best. Cheers!
Hi,i have problems with the preview of Samples in the Beatbox (select sample) view. Sometimes the program exits with no visible reason. Also i would like to ask if the delay and reverb effects can be available as insert effects in the next update. Furthermore is it possible to integrate a way to upload the tracks to soundcloud or anything?Thank you for this great application. Its very impressive to see that just one man can create such an app like reason. Very very good work!
I tried adding some samples from a battery 2 kit but they wont load up. They were .wavs but presumably I need to downsample them. Can you recommend some softwear that lets me downsample them easily?
@TommyX: Can you send me a sample that crashes the app please, so I can fix it.Delay is possible but reverb is too hard on the CPU to have more than one instance. Soundcloud may come, but as an optional plugin. I don't want to force "social" on anyone.@music noob: As long as the samples are 16bit stereo or mono, they should load. There is a bug with playback for samplerates > 44Khz in the beatbox.Audacity for PC is free and can convert everything.
Thanks for the reply, I have it working nicely now
Totally impressive. Congratulations!
i have to be honest , its not good .. its AMAZING +++ !having used many hardware units and softwares in the last 15 years i can honestly say caustic 2.0 is up there with the most impressive tools ive used .Im using a sony ericson experia and the software runs pefectly .Ive loaded loads of my best samples in and they are as much joy to use in Caustic 2.0 as in reason 5.0 .The drums sounds i had going today were enough to let me see that pro tunes CAN be made in this software . 10 years ago i predicted that palmtop/tablets would be where music software is going , and here i am with the REAL power in my hand . You are the BOSS Rej . cheers .Rusty
Thanks heaps for this software, I've been addicted to it since initial release and the updates are just strength to strength. 2 requests though, 1. Automation editor2. Envelope filter as an insert effect (the only thing I'm missing for my drums.)Once again thank you for this.Big ups!!Dan.
Ok I've noticed infrequently in song mode that somtimes an instrument pattern drop out for a bit and comes inon the next bar again , actually we I rendered it did tht too .Also in song mode when I make say 8 bars of blocks thenfor example put in a ninth block then delete it , the song mode will still include the ninth spot in the chain minus any sound , even though there are only 8 blocks again . Weird .And ... once in songmode I made a 8 block length arrangement ,then added another 8 after . Then I didn't like the second lot of 8 so I deleted the blocks . Strangely when playing back , the bit from the deleted lot of 8 blocks still played but with the first 8 looping underneath so it was all very loud suddenly and got annoyed .I think really all caustic needs is these issues sorted ,and and undone button or option .. even just 1 step back is perfect. Ohhh and the machine select screen needs machine numbers on it , subsynth1 beatbox1 etc so that when removing stuff you don't have to count down the rack In referance to the select screen .Other than that , it perfect . I'm maing some of the most satisfying beats I've ever made in all my 15 years making music .Cheers , Rusty
I have also experienced the drop out, both on playback and rendering.
what I miss most about Caustic is a FORUM, where we could all exchange tips and ideas and discuss lacking features and stuff...
http://soundcloud.com/mrzufall/chill-too-4made with caustic! Now Samples added .. all samples used are integrated in this great app!
Today, one or two improvements for sequencer came to my mind. What I miss is INSERT and MOVE functions. Insert blank bars and move selected patterns. Simple MARKS would be helpful too, but not necessary.I have drop outs too, especially in PCMSYNTH using string sample. It drops out after very first pattern played and comes back one pattern later.
I love caustic! its a great programme, and it makes my way to work enjoyable. The only problem i have is the occasional (random) dropout of patternparts (in play song, and rendered song). I use xperia mini pro and i hope this gets fixed :)
To everyone who has drop outs: If you have a song that drops out within the first couple of bars, can you send me the ".caustic" file for it please. (email link on the right side here) This is the biggest bug left in V2.0 and I have only one example song where this happens at pattern 60, making it quite long to debug...Thanks, together we'll figure this one out.
Thanks for the quick response!i've just sent you a caustic-file :)
Rej, it seems the drops out are tempo related, when I change the tempo of the song (from slower to faster) it suddenly disappears, but still drops out in another part 30 seconds later. ".caustic" file on the way..
I also noticed dropouts with pcmsynth but can't reproduce them on a regular basis.Rej, I could lend you a hand and move all feature requests from this thread to http://singlecellsoftware.com/forum/7 (1 feature per new thread), is this needed?
@nMer: Sure, I'd appreciate that! I'll be closing down this blog once the "real" site is officially up anyway, but I much prefer the forum discussion for feature requests, these post comments get lost too easily.
There is the possibility of storing samples in micro sd?
Try DirectoryBind, then you can.
First of all... Hats off to you for this glorious app... Best i ran into so far. Im having one problem though. When i record an audio track using tape machine and then import it through the synth. It only plays a small portion of the file instead of the entire thing. Is there anything that im not doing that you can tell me to help me out. Again thanks for my mobile studio. Now im the envy of all my engineer buddies :-)
@Bobkatt: How long is the track? Can you send it over for testing via email.
... I think you might just be god.
Hias my mail was probably spam filtered, I'll post it here looking forward to an answer--------Your App is marvellous. I really like it. I noticed 2 bugs :Render as Loop renders one beat too much! a 4 bar loop set results in a 4:1:00 bar loop. Bad if I want to use it in SPC.loading a previously saved custom beatbox preset caustic to crash, ich checked the preset file, happily it is a text file:----------------#|0.00 -0.00001000 0.00000000 0.500 1.000 0#|0.00 -0.00001000 0.00000000 0.240 1.000 0#t|0.00 -0.00001000 0.00000000 0.500 1.000 0#Hat|-1.62 -0.02644041 -0.01950002 0.785 1.000 0#|2.10 -0.01538087 -0.00875000 0.500 0.690 0#|0.00 -0.00001000 0.00000000 0.500 1.000 0#|0.00 -0.00001000 0.00000000 0.500 1.000 0#|0.00 -0.00001000 0.00000000 0.500 1.000 01 ----------------------this is a changed 606 preset, as you see the sample pathes were removed (except of a hat)And now the suggestion, in order of importance:Sequencers of machines:multiple select also in PCM/SubSynth piano rolls Delete notes by long press or, an eraser mode, please! This back and forth when deleting a couple of notes is tedious.Nice to have: In Drum-Pattern-editor: longpress and drag up/down for Note Velocity changeIn Pattern Sequencer Make a long press to change existing pattern. Always delete pattern and set it new is also tedious if you want anything to change.a graphical representation of Piano roll patterns in Sequencerlonger patterns in machine piano rollsThe FX quality is fine, but my Samsung SG+ goes, even packed with a lot of equipment and automation, not over 40% DSP, so I think there is some room for improvement: Please make an optional HQ Reverb (at the level of freeverb3 or so): the reverb is really chezy ATM or give it at least some pre/post EQ.Please provide more options for the send fx, because they are somewhat important (reverb look above, delay with filters in fb path) and allow reverb / delay also as inserts.Render to tracks would rock! With longer patterns in PCMSynths' piano roll we could reuse it as loops in the sampler (which then could also have a simple slicer option. nothing with transients, just 4/8/16...parts, automapped from C1)OK, enough of the wishes! I'm looking forward to the next version. I'd even pay again for an update :) Rajko
I'm just now working through Caustic. It is great. I'm trying to find accompaniment for my bass practice, but Caustic is capable of much more. And the interface is beautiful and fairly intuitive.A few problems I'm having now:- finding support online from my PC, not from my tablet.- finding forums for discussion (even unofficial at the moment).- finding sites/tags/etc. for song and pattern sharing. I'd love to get some popular songs *perhaps* minus the vocals, and then subtract whatever instrument I have. That would be like programmable karaoke. This is all on a 10-inch ThinkPad Tablet. Caustic is going to be great on 7-inch tablets, btw. 7 inches is big enough for a better interface, and with headphone out and hdmi, you have a studio in your pocket.Thank you, Rej.
You should get a Soundcloud profile! It's a great way to share your tracks. I built a Soundcloud page not too long ago (soundcloud.com\andybones-1) and uploaded 20+ of my songs done on Caustic, and it's steadily attracting more & more listeners & favoritings. I wouldn't recommend the Soundcloud app for Android though, I found it to be pretty useless. Stick to the standard internet browser page. You can add your own tags, contact other producers & listeners etc. And it's free. BTW I've created this music on a Droid X phone with a 4" display + some good Bluetooth headphones.
I like your creations, andy. ( http://soundcloud.com/andybones-1 ) I guess soundcloud doesn't host the raw .caustic files, though, right?
First off, thank you! I'm always grateful for new listeners & feedback. I do this because it's a passion. As for the file types, I'm 99% sure the raw .caustic files can't be uploaded to Soundcloud, but almost any other common file type works. I export to .wav and convert to MP3 on my PC, then upload. Of course, you could just upload the .wav (or the other export option- .ogg) directly to Soundcloud from your tablet/ phone. I haven't tried uploading anything other than MP3 so I don't know how using .ogg or others would affect the type of file listeners can download, but I know it works.
Andy, what I'd like to do is not just to listen to creations from Caustic, but to be able to open them in caustic and see them, alter them, and imitate what I can.Maybe pairing a dropbox account or the like with the songs in songcloud with a simple link would be a good workaround for now.If Soundcloud could spur this process along, it would be great. I don't mean there needs to be full social functions in the app, but a dedicated site for .caustic files or a link to some of the better ones would help. Since "caustic" is such a generic term, used for both the app name and the files, it makes searching for them very difficult.
Check out www.singlecellsoftware.com for support and more information.
Thanks. Searching for Caustic support is difficult due to the non-unique name. "Caustic" is just such a common word, and it is sometimes used in relation to music. There is even a band named "Caustic" and a 3D design-ray tracing app as well. If Rej, the developer, could consider changing the official name to CausticApp, or if everyone would just agree to refer to it as "CausticApp", then these problems could be largely overcome.BTW, Caustic was one of the apps I downloaded to my phone long ago but rarely, rarely ever tried because I couldn't tell from the name or the icon what it was. So, that is three hits against the name.If rej is considering changing the name, I'm sure there are lots of slight derivations from "Causitc" that would both make associated sites and support more easily discoverable and make it maore apparent just what Caustic is: CausticMusic, CausticTracks, CausticMixer, CausticSounds, etc.
Thanks for the link and the feedback, Andy. You got your url wrong, though. It is a forward slash, not a backslash: http://soundcloud.com/andybones-1
No prob! (and you're right... I freakin always type the wrong "slash" :)
Soundcloud.com/rhythmicsin check it out, my music is made on a 7in Polaroid tablet using caustic2 and I created most samples myself. This is an amazing app and rej is a genius. I hope to be releasing expansionpacks soon! Thanks rej!
